6 Best DIY Hair Mask Recipes You Can Make at Home

Learn how to make a DIY mask to restore your dry or damaged hair. Use one of these easy homemade hair masks to make your hair super soft and shiny.

Here are some application tips when using homemade hair masks:

  1. When applying DIY hair masks, it’s best to apply them to dry or damp hair. After letting the mask do its work, you can shampoo and condition your hair as normal.
  2. Concentrate your application of the mask to the middle lengths and the ends of your hair (unless it’s a scalp mask). You want to put the active ingredients where the hair is the oldest and most damaged.
  3. For most masks, try to leave them on for about 20 minutes. This way, you’ll make sure the mask penetrates the hair cuticle.
  4. To contain the mess, try pinning your hair up, or wrapping it in a shower cap. A shower cap will also trap a bit of heat, which can help speed up the process.

How to Store Hair Masks

Many of these homemade hair masks are made with perishable ingredients, so you won’t want to store them for more than a day or two. But, for the masks that are made with shelf-stable ingredients, you can store them in glass amber jars.

Some of the masks can be applied with your fingers, and some are better applied with a spray bottle. I like these reusable glass spray bottles.

1. Nourishing Hair Mask for Dry, Damaged Hair

If your main goal is to soften and nourish your hair, make a hair mask with higher-fat ingredients, such as avocado, argan oil, and egg yolks.

(Hint: This is why mayonnaise is often used as an easy hair mask — it’s made from oil and egg yolks!)

This DIY mask is a recipe for hair hydration. It’s made with avocado and argon oil, which are packed with fatty acids. It will coat your hair cuticle in moisture to make dry, coarse hair shiny and smooth.

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe avocado
  • 1 tablespoon of argan oil or olive oil
  • 1 egg

Steps:

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a blender, or use a hand mixer. (You can mash the avocado and whisk in the rest of the ingredients by hand, but there will be lumps.)
  2. Apply the mixture onto your dry hair, from roots to tips, then wrap or clip your hair up.
  3. Leave on for at least 20 minutes, then shampoo and condition as usual.

2. Hydrating Hair Mask for Frizzy, Curly Hair

To tame frizz, use rich hydrating ingredients like coconut and jojoba oil. These ingredients may be too heavy for fine or thin hair – but they’re perfect for curls or coarser hair. This mask will also help reduce frizz and fly-always.

Ingredients:

Steps:

  1. Microwave 1/4 cup of coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl until liquified. Stir in 2 tablespoons of jojoba oil.
  2. Divide your hair into sections to make the application of this mask easier. Dip your fingers in the oil, and slowly coat your hair from roots to tips with oil. Work in sections until fully saturated.
  3. Clip your hair up, or cover it with a shower cap. Leave the mask on for at least 20 minutes, or up to an hour. Rinse and shampoo your hair as normal.

3. Clarifying Mask for Flakes and Dandruff

This mask combines the clafying properties of apple cider vinegar and tea tree oil to help reduce flakes and dandruff. Apple cider vinegar is a great hair mask ingredient because it works to soothe itchiness and the scalp’s pH level.

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 6 drops of tea tree oil

Steps:

  1. Mix the water, apple cider vinegar, and tea tree oil in a clean spray.
  2. Spray the mixture on your scalp. Clip your hair up, or cover it with a shower cap.
  3. Let the mask sit for 20 minutes before rinsing and shampooing as normal.

4. Smoothing Mask for Dry Hair and Scalp

Apple cider vinegar closes the cuticle of your hair, making it smoother, shinier, and less prone to frizz. Mix that with honey and moisturizing coconut oil, and you’ve got an incredibly good, smoothing DIY hair mask for both straight and curly hair.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

Steps:

  1. Microwave the coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl until liquid.
  2. Add the honey and apple cider vinegar. Stir to mix.
  3. Apply the mixture to your hair from root to tip. Be sure to saturate your scalp area before moving on to your ends.
  4. Clip your hair up, or cover it with a shower cap. Leave on for 20 minutes before rinsing and shampooing as normal.

5. Deep Clean Mask for Oily, Greasy Hair

If you have excess oil in your hair, try this deep cleaning mask. It uses honey, which is a natural antibacterial ingredient and lemon, which is a natural astringent. This homemade hair mask will help remove excess oil from your hair, without completely stripping it.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 egg white
  • juice from 1 lemon

Steps:

  1. Combine all three ingredients in a bowl. Stir to mix.
  2. Apply the mask to slightly damp hair, focusing the majority of the mixture on your scalp. Clip your hair up, or cover it with a shower cap.
  3. Let the mixture sit for 20 minutes. Rinse and shampoo as normal.

6. Exfoliating Mask and DIY Scalp Scrub

If your scalp could use a good scrub, this is the recipe for you! It’s not just a hair mask, it’s also an exfoliating scalp scrub. Combine moisturizing oils and antibacterial honey to soothe a dry scalp. And, add raw sugar to exfoliate. You can use granulated sugar if that’s all you have, but the larger crystals of raw sugar won’t dissolve as quickly, so you’ll get a better exfoliation.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons raw sugar
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 3 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons sweet almond oil, or olive oil

Steps:

  1. Microwave the coconut oil in a microwave-safe bowl until liquid. Add the rest of the ingredients, and stir to mix.
  2. Separate your hair into sections.
  3. Working section by section, massage the scrub into your scalp. Massage along your hairline and along each part, until your scalp is exfoliated.
  4. Rinse and shampoo as normal.
