If you’ve always wanted to learn how to crochet but didn’t know where to start, the Woobles “Learn to Crochet” Kit might be just what you need! This kit comes with everything you need to get started, including beginner-friendly yarn, ergonomic tools, and step-by-step video tutorials. In this article, I’ll give you an honest review of the Woobles Learn to Crochet Kit and everything it offers.

What are the Woobles?

The Woobles is a company that sells beginner-friendly crochet amigurumi kits. The Woobles was founded by Justine Tiu and Adrian Zhang, and has become very popular following their appearance on Shark Tank.

The Woobles kits come with everything a beginner needs to learn how to crochet and make their very first amigurumi project. There are lots of different patterns to choose from, including penguins, dinosaurs, and limited-edition holiday kits.

The Woobles gifted us their popular Penguin kit, but this article is not sponsored, and the opinions are entirely our own.

What’s in the Kit?

The Woobles kit comes with all the supplies you’ll need to create one amigurumi project, including a crochet hook, several colors of yarn, a tapestry needle, toy stuffing, and a stitch marker.

Materials included

  • The Woobles Easy Peasy yarn
  • Plastic eyes
  • Stuffing
  • Tapestry needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Penguin crochet pattern (PDF download)
  • 4mm ergonomic crochet hook (optional add-on)

Our Review of the Materials

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the materials that came with the kit. The yarn is soft and easy to work with, and the crochet hook is lightweight and comfortable to hold.

Note:  The crochet hook is an additional expense. If you don’t have crochet hooks at home, make sure to add one to your kit purchase.

That said, I think all the kits use the same 4mm hook. So after you buy a hook once, you won’t need to buy another one for your next kit.

What we liked:

Everything you need, all in one kit. From the plastic eyes to the tapestry needle, all materials are included. You don’t have to worry about buying the right yarn or hook or hoping everything will work together.

Beginner-friendly yarn. The Woobles kits come with their own beginner-friendly yarn, which they call Easy Peasy yarn. Easy Peasy yarn is a really smooth yarn made from 75% cotton and 25% nylon. It’s not fuzzy at all, so it’s really easy to see your stitches. (It reminds me of Bernat Maker Home Dec, which we use to demonstrate a lot of our beginner crochet tutorials.)

What we didn’t like:

No printed pattern. The kits don’t come with a printed pattern. Instead, you’ll get a PDF download and links to step-by-step video tutorials.

A lot of people prefer to learn crochet by watching videos, so the lack of a printed pattern isn’t a problem for everyone. But, if you’re the type of person who likes having something physical in front of you while you crochet, I’d recommend downloading and printing out the pattern before starting your kit.

Learning Resources and Customer Support

One of the things that I really appreciated about the Woobles kit was how straightforward and user-friendly the instructions were. Even if you’ve never picked up a crochet hook before, the step-by-step video tutorials will have you making stitches in no time.

What we liked:

  • Clearly written pattern. I thought the pattern instructions were clear and concise, and the videos were a huge help in understanding the process.
  • All Woobles crochet tutorials have both right-handed and left-handed versions.
  • You’ll get unlimited help over e-mail, plus virtual crochet office hours. If you run into an issue, it’s easy to get help.

What we’re unsure about:

  • The projects come pre-started for you.

Some people might love this; some people might not. On the one hand, it’s great that the magic ring set-up round is done for you, so you can jump right into learning the main skills. But on the other hand, some people would rather learn how to do the whole process from start to finish.

Because at some point, you’ll have to learn how to make a magic ring yourself if you want to branch out to other amigurumi patterns.

Overall, I think the projects are great for someone who’s just starting out with crochet, as they’re not too difficult and give you a chance to practice the different techniques you’ve learned. The end results are pretty adorable, too!

Value for Money

When it comes to the Woobles kit, I think you definitely get what you pay for. It’s a relatively affordable kit that comes with all the essentials. If you compare it to other similar kits on the market, I think it’s a pretty good value for the price.

That said, it wouldn’t be too hard to buy all of the supplies separately at your local craft store. To buy everything you need separately, you’d probably spend just as much – if not more – than the price of a kit, but you’d end up with a lot of extra supplies you could use in another project.

But for someone who’s just starting out, the Woobles kit is an excellent choice. Part of what you’re paying for is the convenience of having everything you need in one place. And another big part is the access to the step-by-step video tutorials – plus the added bonus of support from Woobles’ customer service team in case you have any questions or run into trouble.

Who should get a Woobles kit?

I would definitely recommend this kit to anyone interested in learning how to crochet for the first time – especially to anyone who wants to make super cute amigurumi. Woobles recommends the kits for ages 12+, and I think that’s pretty fair. (Younger kids could probably do them if they had an adult around to help.)

On top of that, I think a Woobles kit would make a fantastic gift idea. It’s perfect for any creative person – kids, teens, and adults – who want to learn a new craft skill.

On the other hand, I probably wouldn’t recommend them to experienced crocheters as they might find the patterns a bit too basic.

Conclusion

Overall, I’m really impressed with the Woobles Learn to Crochet Kit. It’s a fantastic starter kit that comes with everything you need to get started, including clear step-by-step instructions, high-quality materials, and lots of super-cute patterns.

The kits are comprehensive, easy to follow, and well put together. Plus, there’s loads of extra support available if you need help.

So, if you’re a new crochet who wants to make amigurumi, give The Woobles a try!

Hi Sarah, thank you for your helpful, in-depth review of the Woobles kit. I’ve done a few kits now and really enjoyed them. Can you please suggest a brand of yarn comparable to the Woobles Easy Peasy yarn? I am trying to find other colors. Thank you! Tania

The closest tube yarn I've worked with is Bernat Maker Home Dec. It comes in a pretty small range of colors, unfortunately.

I'm working on my first wooble now, Felix the Fox. In defense of the pre-started magic ring, I'll say it was super nice to have that started for me so I could just focus on making the stitches. But you're not let off the hook entirely as the other parts of the body, like the belly and the snout require you to make your own magic ring. As someone who tried to make a magic ring from scratch before making any stitches, it was definitely helpful to just get started and comfortable with crocheting before making the attempt at the magic ring.

Yes, that is a really good point. Magic ring can be frustrating and it's nice to tackle that after you get your bearings. Thank you for your thoughts!

I purchased a couple of kits from Woobles....haven't gotten around to start yet but happy with what was in the kits. The "critters" are super cute to choose from. Enjoy!

I love the Woobles, they taught me how to crochet! The animals are adorable, easy to make, and fun to do. My only complaint if I absolutely had to think of one would be that you sew on all of the limbs and attachments. I think crocheting them in would be better, but overall are amazing kits and I will always love them.

Have completed the Penguin! Love the kits - ordered several more. I have referred back to the video for assistance on other similar projects. The videos are easy to follow as well as understand. Compared to Oomaroo - those videos are atrocius! I Love woobles and have now completed two additional penguins from my own yard - lots of compliments. Again these are easy sit down and get a product!
