One of my favorite ways to decorate for the holidays is with handmade crochet snowflakes. I like to hang a few as ornaments on my Christmas tree, and a few more on my windows.

Crochet Techniques to Know

Even though they look intricate, crochet snowflakes are made up of these basic crochet stitches:

  • Chain
  • Single Crochet
  • Double crochet
  • Treble crochet
  • Magic ring

Supplies

To get started, you’ll need a few basic materials:

  • Yarn: Choose yarn in a color of your choice. White yarn is traditional for snowflakes, but you can also experiment with other colors to add some personality to your collection.
  • Crochet hook: You’ll need a hook that is small enough to create tight stitches. Check the instructions on each pattern to see which size hook the designer recommends.
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle, for weaving in the ends

Optional embellishments:

  • Beads or sequins: You can add some sparkle to your snowflakes by attaching beads or sequins. You can add these as you crochet, or sew them on after your snowflake is finished.
  • Glue or starch: If you want your snowflakes to maintain their shape, you can stiffen them using a solution of glue or starch mixed with water. Find more tips on this below!

Best Yarn for Snowflakes

As you browse through the list below, you’ll see that most patterns use one of two types of yarn: either a light-worsted cotton yarn or a cotton crochet thread. Both types of yarn and thread are available in many different colors and are easy to find at most craft stores.

Here are some of the most popular yarns and threads for crocheting snowflakes:

  • Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton
  • Aunt Lydia’s Crochet Thread

How To Stiffen Crochet Snowflakes

Once you’ve finished making your snowflakes, you may want to stiffen them so they hold their shape. Here are the three most popular methods:

  • Glue method: Mix a solution of equal parts white glue (PVA glue) and water in a bowl. Dip your snowflakes into the mixture, squeeze out the excess glue solution, then lay them out to dry on wax paper. You can also pin them into shape as they dry as if you were blocking them.
  • Laundry Starch method: Pour a small amount of liquid laundry starch into a bowl. Dip your snowflakes into the starch, pin them out, and let them dry. You may need to repeat the dipping and drying process a couple of times to get the snowflakes really stiff.
  • Fabric Stiffener method: This product is specifically designed for stiffening fabric. Popular brands of fabric stiffener include Aleene’s Fabric Stiffener and Draping Liquid and Mod Podge Stiffy.

Note: Whichever method you choose, you should know that cotton yarns stiffen much better than acrylic yarns. So, if you want to be able to stiffen your crochet decorations, make sure to choose a cotton yarn or cotton crochet thread.

  • Take your time: Crocheting with such thin yarn can be tricky, so don’t rush it. Make sure to double-check each stitch as you go, and don’t be afraid to rip out and redo any mistakes.
  • Use a stitch marker: Stitch markers help you keep track of where you are in the pattern. At the very least, I recommend using one to mark the beginning of each round. This will help you avoid losing your place and make it easier to count your stitches.
