Necessary Supplies

Crochet appliques don’t take a lot of supplies to make! Here is what you’ll need to make your pattern (but be sure to check your pattern’s supplies list too before getting started!):

  • Yarn. Appliques are great for stash busting. Small motifs are typically made with light to medium-weight yarns. We’ve included a suggested yarn for each pattern in this list.
  • Crochet hook(s). Check your pattern and/or your yarn label to see what hook size it suggests. Exact size usually isn’t crucial for small motifs, but you can easily adjust the size of your pattern by adjusting your yarn weight and/or hook size.
  • Additional tools, like scissors, a yarn needle, stitch markers, etc.

Techniques to Know

Read through your pattern before you get started to make sure you’re comfortable with all the steps. Techniques you might need to know include:

  • Reading a crochet pattern: Understanding how to follow crochet charts and written instructions.
  • Basic stitches: chain (ch), slip stitch (sl st), single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), treble crochet (tr)
  • Shaping techniques: Simple increases and decreases create different shapes.
  • Color changing: For multi-colored motifs, you can either use more than one color of yarn or pick out a variegated yarn.
  • Working in rows and rounds, including making a magic loop.
  • Blocking techniques, to give your shape a professional and finished look.

Tips and Tricks

Adjust your yarn weight to change the size

If you want to create a collection of pieces using the same pattern, try adjusting the yarn weight and hook size to create a variety of sizes. This is especially helpful for projects like leaves or flowers, when you want your collection to look more varied and lifelike.

Pay attention to washability

If you plan to add your applique to a clothing item or another wearable, make sure that you use yarn that is compatible with your original project. Don’t put a non-washable applique on an item like a baby blanket that will get washed all the time!

Block your pattern

Smaller motifs can be prone to curling. Blocking your pattern helps to create a flat design with a finished, professional look. Blocking involves wetting or dampening your fabric and then pinning it into the desired shape to dry.

Stiffen your applique

If you want to create a stiffer piece, you can add Modge Podge or spray starch to the back of your applique. Increase the amount of product you apply to create a stiffer applique.

This technique is often used for magnets, gift cards, gift wrap embellishments, and ornaments.
