How to Make a Velvet Scrunchie
It’s hard to ignore the 90’s inspired velvet scrunchie trend that’s all over the internet right now! And, why would you want to?
DIY velvet scrunchies are so easy and fun to make! They are a fantastic stash-busting project that you can make with just a small ball of yarn. Plus, they work up in less than an hour.
If you work with a cake of this yummy Bernat Velvet Stripes yarn, you can make a big batch in lots of fun colors.

Materials for a Velvet Scrunchie
To make a crochet hair scrunchie, you can use just about any yarn you have in your stash. For this particular velvet scrunchie, I’m using Bernat Velvet yarn, which is a category 5 Bulky yarn.
I love velvet yarn for this scrunchie project because it’s lush and soft, and has a beautiful shine.
For this yarn, I recommend using a size K (6.5mm) crochet hook. IF you use a different yarn, you can use a larger or smaller hook — whichever the ball of yarn recommends.
You’ll also need an elastic hair tie. I prefer to use the “ouchless” style of hair elastics because they don’t have a metal crimp that could snag the yarn.
To summarize, here are the supplies you’ll need:
- velvet yarn
- crochet hook
- hair elastic
- tapestry needle

DIY Scrunchie Pattern
Making hair scrunchies is so simple, you’ll be able to work up this pattern in almost no time at all.
This is the pattern I settled on after trying a few other techniques. Although gauge isn’t crucial to the success of this project, my stitch count is specific to the exact yarn and size of hair elastic I bought. Your gauge or hair elastics may be a slightly different size than mine, so feel free to add/subtract a few stitches as you see fit.
Round 1. To start, crochet 45 DC around the hair elastic. You want to keep going all the way around the hair elastic until it is completely covered. Remember that you want enough stitches to go all the way around the elastic, even when it is stretched out to its fullest diameter. (Like it will be when you use it on a ponytail.)
Round 2. Once you’ve made 45 (more or less) DC stitches around the hair tie, join with a slip stitch. Chain 2, then work 2 DC in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch to the first DC. Break yarn, and weave in ends.
And, that’s all there is to it! See how simple it is?
